James P. Mason is President and Chief Executive Officer of SynerMed, Inc. Since his appointment in 1999, Mason has grown the company from a handful of clients and several hundred members to more than 850,000 members, 10,000 physicians and $600,000,000 in healthcare spend.
As one of the largest Managed Services Organizations (MSO) in the country, SynerMed is poised to address the emerging issues related to healthcare reform. Powered by an integrated suite of products, the company deploys healthcare management solutions to help physicians remain independent through innovative technology, evidence-based medicine, streamlined workflow and advanced management processes.
One of Mason’s passions is to keep the practice of medicine a profession and ensure that it plays a leading role in healthcare reform. For the past decade, he has been an active member of the California Association of Physician Groups (CAPG) and currently sits on its Board of Directors. He is involved in advocacy programs and legislative initiatives aimed at protecting the interests of California’s physician community. He also supports the California Medical Association (CMA) and serves on the boards of local non-profit organizations that support children and education.
Mason began his career in Los Angeles by developing Primary Care Case Management (PCCM) contracts for medical groups with the state of California. In 1994, Mason joined SCAN Health Plan, a HMO in Long Beach, where he spearheaded a Medi-Cal managed care plan to help the elderly community. In the late 1990s, Mason was instrumental in the development of SCAN’s Independent Living Program (ILP), which provided members resources and support services to live independently at home, instead of being sent to nursing homes.
Today, SynerMed is innovating healthcare and preparing physicians for the future of healthcare delivery. Using the power of cloud-based technology, SynerMed plans to deploy a sustainable accountable care model throughout the United States. This healthcare experience will offer higher quality of care, lower costs and greater patient satisfaction.
Mason received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Redlands and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Pepperdine University. He lives in Southern California with his wife and two children.
