Offer the CDC’s Diabetes Prevention Program to Your Employees

Fruit Street delivers the Center for Disease Control’s Diabetes Prevention Program to employers and health plans using group video conferencing, wearable devices such as Fitbit, and the Fruit Street mobile application which allows patients to take photos of their food and receive feedback.

The diabetes prevention program is a 1-year long diet and lifestyle intervention designed to help pre-diabetic patients lose 5-7% of their weight through diet and lifestyle changes. The program is based on clinical research that was published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2002 which showed that patients who complete the program have a 58% risk reduction for developing diabetes. CMS conducted a financial analysis showing that the program saved $2,650 per patient even after attending 4 classes and that diabetic patients have healthcare costs $7,000 more than non-diabetic patients. The program can be paid for as a medical claim and helps health plans reduce their medical claims cost by preventing diabetes.

The Program

Fruit Street’s team of in-house registered dietitians serve as coaches to deliver the science-backed program.
Using the CDC-supported curriculum, coaches educate and facilitate interactive discussion among groups of 5-10 participants whose goal is to lose 5-7% of their starting weight by the end of the year long program.
Classes cover a variety of health and wellness topics including meal planning, tips for eating away from home, and ways to increase daily physical activity. Sixteen group classes are delivered in the first 6 months of the program and 6 group classes are delivered in the last 6 months. Participants are issued a wireless scale, Fitbit, and the Fruit Street mobile application which allows participants to take photos of their food and receive feedback from their coach. The well-researched lifestyle change program has been shown to significantly reduce participants’ risk of developing type 2 diabetes and associated chronic diseases.
